STRATEGY Tourism

sustainability as
bookings rise fast.
PAUL NEEDHAM
Majorca is back at ITB with a
strong message: quality, not
quantity. This boils down to more
sustainability but more families
as well. The Balearic islands want
to establish themselves as a
green destination and are promoting the concept of becoming a
fully sustainable and circular travel destination by focusing on social, environmental and regional
aspects of their tourism products.
Top themes this year include Menorcas biosphere reserve, family
holidays on Ibiza, Majorca as a
film location, and traffic reduction on Formentera.
Tourism minister Iago Negueruela accepts that holidaymakers
with lower incomes might stay
away in future under this strategy: The islands will either become sustainable or they will no
longer exist. We must explain to
people that we are investing in the
protection of the islands.
However, quantity could well
increase this summer. German
tour operators have reported
strong bookings for Majorca this
summer. TUI hopes to send one
million holidaymakers to the island this summer and is already
increasing capacity in response.
Alltours, with a 30% rise in Majorca bookings so far, has chartered
25 more flights for the Easter holidays alone. The sales trend is similar at DER Touristik and FTI.
